Lady Irish win 22nd District title with tense 2-0 victory over Logan-Rogersville

by Dr. Ben Timson

The Lady Irish soccer team traveled to Rogersville to take on the hometown Lady Wildcats in the Class 2 District 5 championship game. It was a rematch of a thrilling game the previous month won 2-1 by the Irish on penalty kicks for the 500th program win. The Irish had two major goals for the evening, score early and contain Maddie Lou Shuburte. The Logan-Rogersville junior entered the match having scored 68 goals during the season and 200 for her career. Claire Majorahn accomplished the first goal when she scored off a pass from Addie Killinger just over five minutes into the match. Mila Jordan returned to the lineup after missing the final two weeks of the regular season due to injury and provided a big boost to the Irish midfield. Teaming with Crosby Morgan and Amelia Luzecky in the middle, Ruby Schnabel, Claire Majorahn, and Jude Daues on the wings, and Addie Killinger at forward Catholic controlled the ball much of the game. Majorahn scored a huge second goal ten minutes before the half also assisted by Killinger to give the Irish some breathing room entering the break. While the attack was going well, the big story of the night was the defensive play containing Schuburte. Alice Farmer was assigned the task of tightly marking her with Izzy Hoerschgen, Summer Goodin, and Sloane Hampel covering. The girls were nearly flawless in front of Mya Marte in goal. Schuburte only had a couple of good looks all evening, the first she hit the post and the second was saved brilliantly by Marte in the waning minutes to keep the Wildcats off the board and the momentum on the Irish side. Catholic outshot Logan-Rogersville 21-7 for the match while Marte recorded her 10th shutout on the season. The game marked the first time the Wildcats had been shutout during the season.

The Lady Irish will travel to Ashland to face the Southern Boone County Lady Eagles in the state quarterfinal match on Saturday, May 30. Game time will be announced soon.  Southern Boone defeated Father Tolton 1-0 to win the District 6 championship and will enter the quarterfinal with a 24-2 record.
