Irish girls tennis make MSHSAA final four

Girls Tennis is State Bound For the second year in a row, the Irish Girls' tennis team is headed to the Final Four in state tournament competition after winning the Sectionals on October 7 in Joplin. The Varsity defeated Nevada 5-0, then faced off for the third time of the season against the Ladies from Logan-Rogersville, who had defeated Mt. Vernon to reach the Sectional finals. Once again, it was a dominating performance from all of the Lady Irish, sweeping the Wildcats 5-0 to move their season dual match record to 18-1 and earning a spot in the Final Four. The Lady Irish will face off against defending state champion St. Louis John Burroughs at 9:00 am on October 12 at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. One interesting side note in this match: Freshman Claire Griesemer will likely face her cousin – and former Springfield Catholic student Maddy Duncan – in the singles competition. The winner of the Catholic-John Burroughs match will play for the state championship at 1:00 at Cooper, while the loser will play for 3rd place at the same time. Good luck and congratulations to the Irish team: Anna Rader, Erin Jarvis, Casey Lee, Claire Griesemer, Cecilia Bailey and Ashley Andrews! In individual singles, both Anna Rader and Casey Lee qualified for Sectionals after placing 1st and 2nd at Districts, with Anna moving on to the state individual tournament for the fourth year in a row after winning her Sectionals match 6-0, 6-0. In individual doubles, the team of Erin Jarvis-Cecilia Bailey qualified for Sectional play after a hard-fought, three-set victory over Bolivar, placing second at Districts. The Girls then defeated Clever 8-0 to advance to the state doubles tournament. The other doubles team, Claire Griesemer-Ashley Andrews, lost a heartbreaker in three sets in the semifinals to the eventual District champions from Helias Catholic. This Thursday, Friday and Saturday will conclude another exciting season for the Lady Irish, with all Varsity girls participating in the Team State on Thursday, and Anna Rader and Erin Jarvis-Cecilia Bailey playing Individual State on Friday and Saturday.
