Irish drop home opener to Mt. Grove

The Irish basketball teams opened up their '17/'18 campaigns against the pre-season state-ranked Panthers of Mt. Grove. The Irish came out of the gate slow and the Panther capitalized by building a 9-point lead after the first quarter. Charlie O'Reilly kept the Irish in striking distance converting 4 of 4 shots from the field. The team chiseled away at the lead while increasing the defensive pressure to get within 5 at the half.

The Irish offense continued to gel in the 3rd quarter and took their first lead of the game. The momentum slowly shifted to the panthers with the help of 12 fouls in the 4th quarter which led to 15 panther points. The Irish made one final push and brought the game within two after a 3-pointer by Mike Manzardo. With only 10-seconds remaining, the Irish quickly fouled and watched the lead extend to three. Jake Branham got a good look at a jumper to tie the game but it would fall just short.

The freshman team defeated Mt. Grove 29-18 in a shortened 2-quarter game and the JV team won 43-37.
