Irish take down Osage in district bracket

SPRINGFIELD, MO — The Irish hosted the Indians of Osage Friday night in the first round of the Class 3, District 3 postseason bracket. The Irish came in as the 3 seed in the bracket and the Indians 6.

The Indians set the tone early, forcing Catholic to a 3 & out on their first offensive series. On their second series, the Indians caught the Irish off-guard on a reverse pass play to the team fullback jetting downfield. The teams would trade punt for the remainder of the first quarter. The Irish offensive line would settle in and the running game opened up in the beginning of the 2nd quarter, sparked by a 38-yard scamper by Heath Southwick. The 84-yard drive was capped off by a Tyson Riley 17-yard touchdwon run sealed by a nice block from Wallace Squibb. The Irish defense began to gain momentum after the score and would stop the Indians after moving inside the Irish red zone.

After taking over on downs the Irish offense picked up where it left off and marched downfield. Jacob Straus finished the drive with 4 straight runs, the final touchdown run coming from the 11-yard line. The Irish would take the 13-7 lead into halftime.

After the half, the Indians went back to work through the air with an 83-yard pass play that initially looked to be only a 3-yard gain. The Irish would quickly answer after a Zach Gebhard 23-yard kickoff return. Tyson Riley followed fullback Heath Southwick on a read-option and would hit paydirt 69-yards later.

Hunter Pucket would end the next Indian drive with a pivotal interception deep in Indian territory. Tyson Riley would answer once again with another scoring run from 30-yards.

The Irish defense continued to produce, limiting the Indians to only 35 yards on their next three possessions. Both teams would trade additional touchdowns but the game was well in-hand. The Irish punch their ticket to the next round of district play on October 27th at Eldon.
