SPRINGFIELD, MO — The Irish hosted Bolivar for what will be the last scheduled COC Small game between the two teams. Bolivar has dominated the series over the years, never losing a game. Tonight, the Fighting Irish would reverse this trend.
The game started out as a defensive battle yielding no points in the first quarter of play. The Irish finally broke through in the second with a 7-yard scoring run by Nick Crites, set up by a 57-yard strike over the middle from Tyson Riley to Lincoln Jones. After a long kick return to the Irish 40-yard line, Bolivar threatened to score with less than 1:30 remaining in the half. The Irish defense came up strong, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Drew Davis on their own 2-yard line with just seconds remaining in the half.
Bolivar received the kickoff to start the second half and went straight to work, completing a 49-yard pass that would eventually set up 6-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 7. From that poing forward a combination of a tough Irish defense and a steady running game would control the remaining 3rd quarter. One Irish possesion ate up a large portion of the 3rd and moved them into the 4th where Logan Brock would connect with a 27-yard field goal to break the tie.
The Irish continued to control the ball and in-tun the clock forcing Bolivar to use up its remaining time-outs. Tyson Riley would finally put the game out of reach with a 56-yard touchdown dash that was completely untouched.
The Irish move to 4-1 and 2-0 in the conference and will face Buffalo at home next Friday (9/22).
