SPRINGFIELD, MO – The Irish hosted the Indians of Seneca on what felt like the first official evening of Summer at Catholic's Knights of Columbus Field. Coming off a road loss to Poplar Bluff, the Irish started Sophomore Gage Goss.
Gage pitched well keeping the Indian batters off balance and racked up 8 strike-outs along with 4 hits through 5 and 1/3 innings. Zach Shelangoski came into the game in the 6th inning and was able to work out of a bases loaded, 1-out situation.
Seth Kamikowski earned a 1-out walk in the bottom of the 7th and proceeded to steal 2nd putting the game within reach. Junior Will Duff battled at the plate sending a handful of off-speed pitches screaming foul. On the 6th pitch of the at-bat Duff sent the fastball sailing beyond the left field wall and over Seminole Street. The blast gave the Irish and immediate 4-2 walkoff win on Senior Night.
Zach Shelangoski earned the victory on the mound for Springfield Catholic Fighting Irish Varsity. He surrendered zero runs on zero hits over one and two-thirds innings, striking out three with no walks. Kale Schrader took the loss for Seneca, he surrendered two runs on one hit over two-thirds of an inning, walking one.
The Fighting Irish Varsity scattered nine hits in the game. Hunter Puckett, Will Duff, and Fintan Long each racked up multiple hits for the Irish.
The Irish move to 19-7 on the season and will travel to Branson tomorrow and on to Republic on Wednesday. Distric play will begin on Saturday against Mt. Vernon at 1:30pm in Hollister.
